On the 29 January 2012, 32 surf lifesavers emerged onto the grounds of the prestigious St Paul’s College at Sydney University for the 2012 National Leadership College. They came from near and far, representing all states along with an international guest from New Zealand.
In the week that followed, these young leaders went on what many would describe as a journey of a lifetime. They learnt, laughed, shared, challenged, debated, sang, danced, listened, inspired and gained knowledge and friendships which will last well beyond the National Leadership College.
The days were packed with keynote speakers, elective sessions, workshops, activities and challenges all relating to the leadership theme of the day. Daily themes included subjects on emotional intelligence, strategic thinking and situational leadership.
Some highlights of this year’s program included keynote presentations from Brett Kirk (previous Sydney Swans Co-captain) and Shandra Moran (Operations Manager, Be Learning).
A gala dinner was held on the final night, with College attendees hosting 30 special guests including key leaders of SLSA and sponsors. The participants provided an inspiring overview of their college experience and left guests with no doubt that this is an amazing group of surf lifesavers.

Here’s what some of them had to say about the college:
“Amazing week with extremely inspiring people. Has changed my outlook to aim much higher in all aspects of life. With the tools to do so.” Riley McGregor
“The best week of not just my lifesaving "life" but of my life! Amazing personal growth as well as meeting and working with the most amazing people. Inspired!” Alicia Armstrong
“SLSA Leadership College challenged us physically, emotionally and mentally to better understand ourselves, other people and the world around us to become a more authentic "can do" leader. The content, facilitators and participants made the college such a success which will ultimately benefit us, our clubs and SLSA for years to come.” Steve Corney
“Absolutely amazing week - met so many inspirational people (presenters, participants, facilitators, mentors - everyone) that have provided tools not just for our 'surf' lives but for life generally. Loads of fun and constant challenges that have shown I can achieve more than I ever thought, as well as showing us the value of having a supportive and effective team around us.” Erin Pratt
