SLSA's response to beach wheelchair media coverage

In response to recent media coverage of beach wheelchair operations at surf clubs, Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) can confirm that there is no ban on beach wheelchairs, and that all beach wheelchairs currently operated by clubs are covered under SLSA’s insurance.

SLSA will be working with all interested parties to formulate a long-term program within all clubs throughout Australia. As with all SLSA programs, it is imperative that appropriate risk management guidelines are in place before a national program is implemented.

Furthermore, SLSA is now working to ensure national operational procedures are in place for the safe use of beach wheelchairs.

SLSA is an inclusive organisation with over 158,800 members nationally.  SLSA runs many programs around Australia to cater for both our members and members of the public with a disability - including the use of beach wheelchairs by a number of our clubs.
