The Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold is one of the most challenging endurance races in surf sports. What began as the central theme for a motion picture over 30 years ago, has now commanded a place on Australia’s annual sports calendar.

A course designed for the endurance surf sport competitor who is up for the Ultimate Challenge. A gruelling 41.8km that covers the Gold Coast strip from Coolangatta to Broadbeach, testing athletes to their limit. Compete as an individual U19 to 50+ or part of a team.

A course designed for the everyday endurance athlete that commands the best. With 21km of surf sport endurance action, this new look course includes all legs arriving in and out of Coolangatta Beach allowing for increased engagement with fans and a great atmosphere to help cheer you on. Compete as an individual U19 to 50+ or part of a team.

TAKE ON THE YOUTH CHALLENGE

Enter the Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold Youth Challenge and be part of one of Australia’s most iconic sporting events.

This event is especially designed for our aspiring lifesavers and future ocean and beach event competitors (10-16 year old’s) who are up for a challenge and keen to be part of the main event experience.

The course consists of a 300m soft sand run, a 400m swim, 400m run, 500m board and then a 50m run to conclude at the elite finish arch.

Short Course Restrictions

• A team entered into the event will consist of any competitor combination with a minimum 2, maximum 4 athletes. Each leg must be completed by one individual only, e.g. the ski leg must be completed by one competitor only. Individuals can complete more than one leg, e.g. the same person can complete the ski and the swim legs.
• Teams must also have a minimum of 2 handlers.
• Team composition:
– Male or Female team: 2 to 4 male competitors or 2 to 4 female competitors
– Mixed team: any combination of 2 to 4 competitors with a minimum of 1 male and 1 female competitor.
• All individual entrants must be a minimum 16 years of age at date of race.
• All team entrants must be a minimum of 14 years of age on the event day to be eligible to compete in the beach run legs of a team event, 15 years of age to be eligible to compete in swim or board legs and 16 years of age to be eligible to compete in the ski leg.
• A Mates Wave category will be available in the short and long course for both individuals and teams. This category is for competitors who wish to participate with a non SLSA compliant ski i.e. ocean kayak. Please note entry in to this category is participation ONLY and not medal placings will be awarded.
• It is compulsory for each competitor to have a board paddler (minimum proficient Surf Rescue Certificate award holder) with them in the swim leg and they must wear a fluoro shirt/rash vest of their own. The competitor’s board paddler must also visibly wear their competitor’s number, and dependent on conditions, must be tagged by their competitor as they enter the The board paddler’s details are to be provided in the handler section of the entry form.
• It is compulsory for each competitor to wear a fluoro pink coloured swim cap during the swim leg which will be provided in their competitor pa
• Personal Floatation Devices (PFD)
– It is compulsory for all competitors to wear a minimum certified AS4758 Level 50 or Type 2 lifejacket whilst completing the ski
– Please note that the Type 3 or Level 50S lifejacket will not be accepted unless they meet the meet the conspicuous colour requirements. There are many styles and stockists of the Level 50 lifejacket and we recommend you choose a paddle vest that has a lower cut under your arms to maximise paddling comfort.
– If competitors wish, they are permitted to wear certified AS4758 Level 100, Level 150 or Level 275 Lifejackets in a conspicuous colour, which are of a higher safety standard however are known to be bulkier and limit paddling performance.
