Surf Life Saving Australia will launch its surf sports season when the Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold returns to the Gold Coast on October 15 and 16.
More than 500 competitors will take on the iconic event in short and long course formats across individual and team categories.
The Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold is considered one of the most physically challenging endurance races of its kind in the world. The multi-disciplinary course combines swimming, running, board paddling and surf skiing.
It was first held in 1984 as the fabric for the legendary Australian film Coolangatta Gold and has evolved into one of the most famous surf sports events in the world.
The event is open to the public and consists of a 32.4 km Short Course and a 41.5 km Long Course that can be taken on individually or as a team.
“32 years after its inception the Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold remains the ultimate test of a surf sports athlete,” SLSA President Graham Ford said.
“To conquer the Gold course is the ultimate achievement in physical and mental toughness and that is why it continues to attract everyone from the elite athletes to those who are looking for a challenge to work towards and accomplish.”
Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Kate Jones, said Queensland’s ‘Famous for Fun’ Gold Coast provided the ideal location for the event, a destination synonymous with world-class sporting events.
“It’s fantastic to have this iconic event on the Gold Coast, supported by Tourism and Events as part of an exciting line up of participatory events in the destination” Minister Jones said.
“Hosting events like the Coolangatta Gold not only provides a boost to the local economy but reinforces the Gold Coast’s reputation as a premier sporting event destination.”
The 2016 running of the Gold will continue the proud partnership of Australia’s largest equipment hire company Coates Hire and Surf Life Saving Australia.
“This is an event Coates Hire is so proud to be associated with as its naming rights partner. It is iconic and with a commitment to community and safety it really encapsulates so much of what we stand for at Coates Hire,” Coates Hire CEO Michael Byrne said.
“One of the things I love about the Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold is the opportunity it presents for people of all levels of ability to take on what really is the ultimate challenge, whether that be as an individual or with teammates. I’m looking forward to seeing the event continue to grow with us.”
Coates Hire is also the exclusive supplier of hire equipment and event infrastructure for both the Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold and The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, to be held on the Sunshine Coast from April 16-24.
The Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold will be presented in October 2016 in conjunction with SLSA’s strategic event partner Tourism and Events Queensland.
