Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Surf Lifesavers descend on Scarborough
- Thousands of visitors expected at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships in Perth
- One of the world’s biggest ocean sports events
- Sponsored by the State Government through Tourism WA
More than 5,000 competitors will flock to Western Australia next month as Scarborough Beach hosts 2018 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, known as “The Aussies”.
The Aussies is an annual event which sees members from Australia’s 311 Surf Clubs, come together to compete in more than 400 beach and ocean events.
In addition to competitors, thousands more are expected to attend as spectators and support crew.
One of the world’s largest ocean sports events, The Aussies 2018, held between April 14 and 22, will showcase the amazing transformations of Scarborough, Perth and WA to the nation.
The State Government is proud to sponsor the 2018 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships through Tourism WA.
Supporting mass-participation events like The Aussies forms part of Tourism WA’s plan to grow the number of visitors to the State over the next two years.
Comments attributed to Tourism Minister Paul Papalia:
“A lot has changed since Western Australia last hosted the championships in 2014, with Scarborough undergoing a $100 million revitalisation to make it one of Australia’s best beachfront destinations.
“Our new world-class Optus Stadium, the redevelopment of the Perth Airport, the construction of the Elizabeth Quay waterfront precinct, the sinking of the railway line between Northbridge and the CBD, thousands of new hotel rooms, as well as a flourishing dining and entertainment scene, have made Perth a fantastic place to be, both for locals, and for visitors to the State.
“I would like to congratulate the event organisers, and wish all the competitors the best of luck in the Championships.
“Mass participation events such as The Aussies are important as they encourage high levels of visitation, which helps to fill our hotel rooms, boost our economy, add vibrancy to the State, and help promote the State through media exposure.
“To everyone visiting WA, I hope you enjoy your stay, and encourage you to explore our extraordinary State.”
