Aussies 2021
COVID-19 Information

Update 30 March 2021 | Event status: Proceeding

Surf Life Saving Australia is aware of the current COVID-19 situation in Queensland. We are closely monitoring the situation, however there is no change to the planned event at this time.

In an effort to make the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (The Aussies) as safe and risk free as possible, whilst still delivering an exceptional championship experience, Surf Life Saving Australia has made some changes to our event day operations as per our COVID Safe Event Plan.

Our COVID Safe Plan for the Aussies has been constructed in full consultation with QLD Health.

While we hope to make The Aussies ‘on beach’ experience as close as possible to normal you will notice some changes leading into the event, and during the Championships. These changes will broadly affect all athletes, officials, coaches, team management, spectators, club members, event personnel, contractors and workforce.

DAILY CHECK-IN AND CONTACT TRACING

All areas of the Aussies will have designated SIGN POSTED entry and exit points. For the duration of the Championships everyone will be required to enter and exit an area via the designated points.

Entry and exit to each area will be electronically recorded via two methods:

  1. Accreditation Lanyard – if you have registered for the event and received a lanyard you will be required to wear the lanyard on the outside of your clothing at all times. The lanyard contains an RFID chip that will be automatically scanned as you walk into and out of an area. You do not need to do anything further.
  2. QR Code – if you are not registered for the event or you have forgotten your lanyard you will be required to scan the QR code at each entry point with your smart phone and fill in the appropriate details each time you enter an area. SLSA will be utilising the QLD Government QR code system. Signs will be appropriately displayed at each entry point.

Parts of the event site will be ‘restricted access areas’, including Officials HUB, VIP Areas, Competition Areas and the various event compounds. Where only those with the correct accreditation will be allowed access, so please keep an eye out for signage around the venue that explains this.

COVID RELATED HEALTH MEASURES

  • CAPACITY LIMITS – will be in place for all areas, compounds, buildings, marquees etc. Please take note of the capacity limits signage in each specific area and work with the Event Personnel to ensure limits are not exceeded and areas are not shut down due to non compliance.
  • QUEING POINTS – will have markers on the ground to maintain 1.5m physical distance between you and others. Additional signage will also be place around the venue to remind you of social distancing at all times.
  • CLUB TENTS – will be allowed on beach, however we ask, where possible, that you leave a gap of 1.5m between your club tents and a different club to ensure correct social distancing is kept between different surf clubs.
  • HAND SANITIZER – At every entry/exit point you will notice hand sanitizer to ensure good hygiene is maintained throughout the Aussies. We strongly encourage that you use the hand sanitizer available every time you enter and exit and area.
  • PHYSICAL DISTANCING – Signage as well as markers placed around event venues will assist with appropriate spacing and queuing.
  • TEAM MANGER AND ATHLETE BRIEFINGS – All briefings (except the Surf Board Riding Briefing/Marshalling) will be digital-only presentation formats, avoiding non-essential gathering. Information about the various briefings will be sent directly to Team Managers, athletes and support personnel i.e. IRB Drivers
  • PRESENTATIONS – Winners and placegetters will still have the normal presentations either on beach (Boats and Beach events) or back of beach in the Festival Zone (Maroochydore water events). However, to ensure physical distancing, medals will be presented on a medal tray rather then placed around the neck of the recipient.
  • SIGNAGE – You will notice a large number of COVID related signage place all around the venue for the Aussies. These signs have been provided to ensure correct COVID messaging is available to all event patrons so that they are reminded of the correct COVID practices to ensure a COVID Safe Event
  • PA ANNOUNCEMENTS – Throughout the championships you will hear COVID related messages communicated over the PA System at the Aussies. This is just another way we are communicating our COVID messaging to all event patrons to ensure COVID practices are adhered to at all times and we are successful in delivering a COVID Safe Event.
  • CLEANING – We will carry out extensive cleaning of all toilets and communal places multiple times each day to ensure a clean and safe event. You will notice a large number of cleaners walking around the venue wiping down touch services, cleaning toilets, tables, chairs and any other high traffic areas.

  2. For any single day visitors/spectators or a few hour visitors/spectators we will have in place QR codes at every entry and exit point to the venue. It is a requirement that you contact trace and scan the QR code when you enter each and every area. To ensure a COVID Safe Event and to ensure we have successfully contact traced everyone who attends the Aussies it is essential that all visitors and spectators who don’t have an accreditation lanyard take the time to scan the QR code and check in.
