Update 30 March 2021 | Event status: Proceeding
Surf Life Saving Australia is aware of the current COVID-19 situation in Queensland. We are closely monitoring the situation, however there is no change to the planned event at this time.
In an effort to make the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (The Aussies) as safe and risk free as possible, whilst still delivering an exceptional championship experience, Surf Life Saving Australia has made some changes to our event day operations as per our COVID Safe Event Plan.
Our COVID Safe Plan for the Aussies has been constructed in full consultation with QLD Health.
While we hope to make The Aussies ‘on beach’ experience as close as possible to normal you will notice some changes leading into the event, and during the Championships. These changes will broadly affect all athletes, officials, coaches, team management, spectators, club members, event personnel, contractors and workforce.
The changes you will experience are as follows:
At Aussies 2021 all athletes, officials and those groups listed here will be given an accreditation lanyard containing an RFID chip which will be automatically scanned at all designated beach entry and exit points in addition to back of beach areas.
Accreditation lanyards must be worn to gain access to any competition areas or back of beach areas.
Accreditation lanyards must be worn around the neck on the outside of all clothing, clearly visible to COVID marshalls or security who will be present at all entry and exit points.
If any registered athlete, team manager, official, club member, event personnel, contractors and workforce or close contact have COVID-19 symptoms (click here for list of symptoms) from 1 April up to and including the start of the Aussies 16 April, we ask that you please do not attend the event. Contact us at [email protected] or 02 9215 8000 by 3:00pm Thursday 15 April to discuss your event entry options. Requests received after this time will not be considered.
Maintain good hygiene practices at all times, including: regular hand washing and sanitisation when entering venues, after using the bathroom and before and after handling food; and covering your mouth and nose if you need to cough or sneeze. Hand wash facilities are available through the event site. Additionally, hand sanitiser will be available at all venues and aid stations.
Comply with any QLD Health direction and respect event staff, security or emergency services staff.
Wearing masks can help reduce the spread of COVID-19. You may choose to wear a mask, however it is not mandatory to do so at our event.
SLSA will be operating an accreditation and check in process at the Aussies in 2021. Your Accreditation Lanyard will allow you access to the event without the need to scan the QR code on your smart phone each time you enter an area.
ACCREDITATION LANYARD – Every person who attends Aussies that pre-registers will have their Aussies accreditation available to collect from the Accreditation and lycra collect marquee (Pierce Park, next to the Admin Centre Maroochydore) from Wednesday 14 April till Tuesday 20 April 2021. Any collection after these dates can be done from the Admin Centre. The Accreditation and lycra collect marquee will operate during the following times:
LYCRA COLLECTION – This year each individual athlete is responsible for the collection of their own competition lycra. Lycras will be provided to each athlete when they collect their Accreditation Pass. Opening times to collect your lycra are as above.
All areas of the Aussies will have designated SIGN POSTED entry and exit points. For the duration of the Championships everyone will be required to enter and exit an area via the designated points.
Entry and exit to each area will be electronically recorded via two methods:
Parts of the event site will be ‘restricted access areas’, including Officials HUB, VIP Areas, Competition Areas and the various event compounds. Where only those with the correct accreditation will be allowed access, so please keep an eye out for signage around the venue that explains this.
Spectators are encouraged to attend this year’s Aussie when all COVID rules and regulations applied, such as maintaining a physical distancing requirements of 1.5m. If you do come to the event, please ensure you “check in” to the event. This can be done in two ways;
Spectators who do not attend the Aussies are encouraged to follow all the action via the Live Stream. The Live Stream will be available on all of SLSA’s digital channels, and will cover all finals for the Youth and Open Championships, delivering seven days of Surf Sports Action. The specific live stream details will be released closer to the event.
