The Australian Life Saving team selectors have named 47 athletes who will strive to represent Australia over the next 18 months leading up to the Life Saving World Championships 2018. The championships will be held in Adelaide from 17 November – 2 December 2018.
The squad will feature 10 athletes who were a part of Australia’s World Championships 2016 team including Jordan Mercer (Noosa Heads) and Jake Lynch (Newport).
Current Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWoman Finals Series champions Matt Poole (Kurrawa) and Harriet Brown (Northcliffe) will also join the squad.
Other notable athletes include Rio 2016 Olympic representative Riley Fitzsimmons (kayak), 2017 Swimming Australia Titles backstroke finalist Brad Woodward, and 2017 Interstate Ironman champion Ben Carberry.
A fresh-faced coaching group will feature former New Zealand Youth Team head coach Kurt Wilson who will coach the team for the first time.
Nine-time Nutri-Grain IronMan Finals Series champion Shannon Eckstein will work beside Wilson as an assistant coach for the first time with Andrew Bowden (pool) and Martin Lynch (beach).
Wilson said the team’s focus will be on culture and creating a framework to develop over the next 18 months.
“We have a lot of depth and a really neat spread across several disciplines,” he said.
“From a squad perspective, we are stoked with the work we have done with the selectors and the names we chose.
“The spine of the team is always going to be the culture and how the team works and the dynamic of those athletes which creates the performance platform we are striving to.
“It will be a great first up test when we travel to the Sanyo Bussan Cup and The World Games in June and July this year to kick things off.”
Ocean and Beach athletes will compete in the Sanyo Bussan Cup in Miyazaki, Japan on 24 June, with pool athletes competing at the World Games in Wroclaw, Poland from 21-22 July.
The Australian Youth Lifesaving Team will be announced next week.
