Beachgoers will be able to monitor the surf conditions at over 12,000 Australian beaches from their iPhones, thanks to Surf Life Saving’s (SLS) free Beachsafe iPhone application.
Launched in late October, the exciting new innovation from SLS has already been downloaded over 10,000 times, and is currently the 14th most downloaded free app on the iTunes App Store.
The app is an extension of SLS’s Beachsafe website and provides real-time beach safety information on Australia’s beaches and coastal areas. Users will be able to find their nearest patrolled beach, check on weather and surf conditions and make educated decisions about swimming, surfing, rock-fishing and diving.
Surf Life Saving Australia’s Coastal Safety Services Manager, Matt Thompson, believes the Beachsafe app is an essential tool for anyone with an iPhone planning to visit the beach this summer.
“Beachsafe is great for anyone going to the beach this summer, whether you’re a regular beachgoer or a first time visitor.
“If someone is unfamiliar to an area, they can use the app's ‘Beach Near Me’ feature to identify nearby beaches and view hazard, patrol, tide and weather information,” said Thompson.
While the app is currently only available on iPhones, SLSA is close to releasing an android version meaning users of all smartphones will soon be able to take advantage of the service. SLSA’s IT Manager, Gary Daly, believes the popularity of Beachsafe will only continue to grow.
“We’ve been blown away by the number of downloads in the first fortnight and I think with summer arriving, the app will only become more popular. As a user experience, Beachsafe is simple to use and the information displayed is easy to understand.”
Daly expects the functionality of Beachsafe to improve over the next 6-12 months, with his team looking at ways to expand the features currently available to users.
“We’re happy with the amount of information currently available on Beachsafe but we’re looking at ways to improve it. This will be an evolving project and we envisage that over the next few months there’ll be some exciting new updates.”
Beachsafe, developed by digital agency macdaddy, is already receiving positive feedback from users, with the app currently holding a 4/5 star rating on the iTunes App Store. Daly believes monitoring user feedback is essential to improving the functionality of Beachsafe.
“The user feedback has been mostly positive so far – obviously there have been suggestions on how we can improve the service and we‘ll be taking these into consideration.”
Beachsafe is available free of charge from the iTunes App Store.
