Lifesaving legend Ky Hurst showed his class at the 2011 Crazy John's Queensland Championships, taking out the blue-ribbon Ironman title on the third and final day of competition.
With the field wide open following the withdrawal of high profile competitors Zane Holmes, Shannon Eckstein and Matt Poole, Hurst led from start to finish on his way to a solid win in the challenging conditions.
"My lead up to State Champs has been almost perfect but surf is surf and, at the end of the day, you could be out in front and still end up last, or you could be in last place but end up in front," Hurst said.
"I believe you create your own luck through hard work and I know that I’ve been working hard."
Former Australian Ironman champion Pierce Leonard took out silver, with Mooloolaba’s Dylan Newbiggin grabbing the bronze. Check out highlights of Hurst's win below.
In the women's final, Liz Pluimers took out gold in a tightly contested race, despite almost losing her ski, with Northcliffe club-mates Courtney Hancock and Harriet Brown coming home in second and third respectively.
Pluimers’ victory denied Hancock the chance to take her third successive Queensland Ironwoman title. Check out the highlights below.
In other results, Kurrawa’s Chanel Hickman provided one of the biggest upsets of the Crazy John’s Queensland Championships when she upstaged reigning Australian and World Champion Melissa Howard in the Open Female Beach Flags.
However there was still plenty of joy for Howard, who dominated a stellar field to take out the Open Female Beach Sprint.Highlights of Hickman's win are below.
In the surf boats, Gold Coast club Currumbin took out the Open Male Surf Boat, while Sunshine Coast rival Mooloolaba dominated the Open Female final.
Gold Coast powerhouse Northcliffe took out the overall competition ahead of Mooloolaba and Kurrawa. Maroochydore and Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park rounded out the top five.
