Surf Life Saving’s premier surf sports event “The Aussies” will return to the Sunshine Coast in 2021 for only the fourth time in the history of the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.
The Aussies 2021 will be held from Friday 16 April through to Saturday 24 April 2021.
The Sunshine Coast is a favourite for competitors, family, friends and the community with over 7,000 competitors and over twenty thousand spectators over the nine days of the Championships.
The events cover all the skills required to save a life from water skills to beach skills to first aid alongside the community participation event including The Aussies Ocean Swim.
Surf Clubs on the Sunshine Coast are once again supporting the championships in 2021, including Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland, and Mooloolaba.
Planning for the Aussies 2021 is well underway already in what will be yet another major event secured by Queensland and the Sunshine Coast.
Surf Life Saving Australia President Graham Ford AM has fond memories of the 100th anniversary of the Aussies held on the Sunshine Coast in 2016 and what a huge success it was.
“We all have wonderful memories of 2016, and to again welcome the Sunshine Coast as the venue for the 2021 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships is very exciting,” said Mr Ford AM.
“We have wonderful partners in Tourism and Events Queensland, Sunshine Coast Council, Visit Sunshine Coast, our host Surf Life Saving Clubs, and of course a strong interest from the Sunshine Coast community.
“Surf lifesaving continues to thrive on the Sunshine Coast – a nursery that has seen so many great champions, great surf lifesavers and even greater Australians created in a community that prides itself in achieving great things.
“If 2016 is anything to go by I am sure that together 2021 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships will be even bigger and better.”
Mayor Mark Jamieson said that hosting The Aussies again in 2021 was a great opportunity for the Sunshine Coast.
“Our Sunshine Coast is one of the homes of surf lifesaving, with a number of our clubs dating back more than 100 years,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“Our beaches provide the perfect stage for the Aussies competition, being home to three of our country’s premier surf lifesaving clubs, with a strong history of success and participation in The Aussies.
“Competitors who took part in The Aussies 2016 told us how much they enjoyed racing in Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba, so we are really pleased to have the national championships back on our beaches in 2021.”
