Event timetable released for Aussies 2021 on the Sunshine Coast
Surf Life Saving Australia has today officially released the event timetable for the 2021 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (Aussies), to be held between April 16-24 on the Sunshine Coast.
Competitors from 314 club’s nation-wide will compete in hundreds of events throughout nine intense days of competition across three locations – Alexandra Headlands, Maroochydore and Mooloolaba, on the Sunshine Coast.
“Like everyone involved in surf lifesaving, we were very disappointed when we had to make the decision to cancel the Aussies in 2020 due to COVID-19, but we are super excited, positive and actively working towards the 2021 Aussies on the Sunshine Coast,” said SLSA National Sport Manager Wayne Druery.
“The SLSA Sport team is working very closely with QLD Health Authorities and Sunshine Coast Council to ensure the event is COVID safe. It is a complex process but we are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our competitors, officials and support staff.
“While we are planning for many different scenarios, competitors should be advised that timetables could change due to unforeseen circumstances related to COVID-19. We are encouraging all competitors and athletes to be present for the entirety of their competition categories, so as to not miss an event due to it being rescheduled.”
Competition dates and times* for Open, Youth, Masters events as well as Board Riding, Lifesaving, Surf Boats and the Ocean Swim races are now available on the Surf Life Saving Australia website.
The week-long festival of surf sports will commence with the Youth competition on Friday 16 – Saturday 17 April, followed by Masters on Sunday 18 – Monday 19 April.
Opens events will run from Tuesday to Saturday (April 20 – 24) with Board Riding, Surf Boats and Lifesaving disciplines to be held over the duration of the competition.
The Aussie Ocean Swim will be held over two days this year with the Masters on Saturday 16 and Youth and Opens on Sunday 17 and is a great opportunity for the general public to be a part of the largest surf lifesaving event in the world.
“We are also excited to announce that this year we are expanding the Aussie Ocean swim across two days to allow for more competitors and athletes not only from surf lifesaving to take part but also the broader public,” Druery said.
The 2021 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships is supported by the Sunshine Coast Council and by the Queensland Government, through Tourism and Events Queensland, and features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar.
