The North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club has taken out their fifth consecutive Australian Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Championship on a historic weekend of racing.
The powerhouse IRB club took out six gold medals, one silver and two bronzes to cement their win, continuing their reign as the most successful IRB club in history.
Behind North Burleigh was the Kurrawa SLSC in second place, and the Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club in third.
Kiama Downs SLSC took out an iconic victory, winning the first ever Australian Masters IRB Championship ahead of Caves Beach SLSC and Kurrawa SLSC.
The Illawarra club dominated the masters’ category, picking up four golds medals, two silvers and two bronzes.
Surf Life Saving Australia general manager of capacity and capability Greg Meagher said the record number of crews competing noticeably increased the quality of competition.
“This year we had over 720 competitors, the most we’ve ever had, and it was clear the number of competitors brought up the quality of competition significantly,” he said.
The masters’ competitors put on an impressive display in their first ever national competition, and everyone on the beach saw some of our most experienced lifesavers putting their rescue skills on show.”
We would like to thank the Cudgen Headland SLSC for putting on such a great event, and congratulate North Burleigh on their dominant performances year after year.”
