GET INVOLVED

Surf Life Saving offers opportunities and pathways to people of all ages and capabilities.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT

There are many ways in which you can get involved as a Surf Life Saving volunteer. Surf Life Saving has opportunities for people to be an active patrol member saving lives on the beach, an age manager for Nippers on the weekend or as a volunteer club official working behind the scenes to ensure things run smoothly.

Nippers

NIPPERS

Nippers is a junior activities program that introduces children aged 5 to 14 to Surf Life Saving. It’s a great way for children to make friends, be active and learn how to enjoy the beach safely. The program is focused on play, participation and fun. Nippers first learn about surf awareness and safety.  As they progress through the various age groups, nippers will undergo lessons in wading, running, ocean swimming, board paddling and lifesaving skills as well as learning the basics of resuscitation and first aid.

Once Nippers reach the age of 8 they can test their skills in competitions with other clubs from around their branch or state, called surf carnivals. The Nippers programme is delivered by one of the individual surf lifesaving clubs located around the country.  In most states, Nippers runs from October to March, and usually on a Sunday morning but this does vary from club to club so check your local club for details.

Lifesaving is something for the whole family to get involved in and there are many supporting roles that you can play as a parent of a child involved in Junior Activities. Not only will Nippers improve your child’s skills, knowledge and confidence on the beach and in the surf. But as a member of their local club, Nippers become a valued part of the country’s biggest volunteer community, and learn the skills to become a qualified surf lifesaver.
