Earlier this month, 19 surf lifesaving members descended on Adelaide for the National Leaders Masterclass 2018, an annual leadership and development programs for members aged 30 years and over who already hold a senior leadership role in Surf Life Saving (SLS).
The Masterclass, an essential step in the SLS Leadership Pathway, provides an exciting opportunity for members within the movement to further develop their leadership skills and continue to positively contribute to the success of SLS.
As well as learning new skills and creating opportunities for personal growth, Masterclass opens new networks with other like-minded and passionate members across the country, who are committed to making a difference within the movement. The skills they gain are designed to be taken back to clubs and into other areas of the participant’s daily life, with the aim of contributing to SLSA’s mission statement of saving lives, creating great Australians and building better communities.
The program is the result of a strategic partnership with the University of South Australia (UniSA) that was developed in late 2017. This year, 8 participants enrolled to complete the Graduate Certificate of Business Administration (Graduate Certificate) which they commenced as part of Masterclass. The internationally recognised degree program will be a SLSA cohort only with materials and case studies relating back to Surf’s unique operating environment to maximise learning outcomes. The program provides credit into UniSA’s 5-star MBA program and the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration comprises of four courses including:
- Strategic Thinking: Concepts and Tools (which was partially covered during Masterclass)
- Responsible Leadership
- Entrepreneurship and Innovation
- Accounting for Decision Making
During the four days of Masterclass, the first course in the Graduate Certificate, Strategic Thinking: Concepts and Tools, was partially delivered to all participants with all participants given the option of continuing with their studies.
