Nominations open for the third cohort of the SLSA Women’s Mentoring Program
Nominations are now open for the third intake of the SLSA Women’s Mentoring Program, with an increase in the number of positions available due to overwhelming demand.
The Women’s Mentoring Program promotes women within Surf Life Saving, facilitating empowerment, support and leadership skills which can be applied to their paid roles inside and outside of Surf Life Saving, volunteer activities and everyday life.
The 12-month program, which launched in July 2020, has already seen one cohort graduate with a second cohort currently underway and a strong interest for a third.
The third intake for the Women’s Mentoring Program has increased its capacity to 40 mentors and 40 mentee positions available, while the age limit for mentees has also been reduced to 16 years old, as the interest from younger female surf lifesaving members has increased.
SLSA Life Member, Independent Director on the SLSA Board and Chair of Surf Sports Australia, Suzanne Storrie, said it was fantastic to see such a keen interest, so much so that the program has increased the positions available and lowered the age limit to include more women.
“We are already seeing women from the first and second mentoring cohorts take on new leadership roles. We hear from both mentors and mentees that this program is making a significant difference to their lives and leadership aspirations,” Storrie said.
“I’m excited that in addition to 20 new places for women in this third cohort of the SLSA women’s mentoring program that we have created places for young women from 16 years of age, which is very promising to see.
“I’d like to encourage women and girls who may have previously applied and missed out on limited spots to re-apply and encourage other women and girls who you think would benefit from the program to apply.”
The Program promotes ongoing supported pathways of personal and professional development as well as networking opportunities. Each mentee will be selected based on demonstrated leadership abilities and their potential and willingness to develop further in this area and move into leadership positions.
If you or someone you know would like to strengthen their leadership skills or become a mentor and foster this in other females, make sure to fill out the online application form below.
Nominations are now open and will close on Sunday 26 September 2021.

“The mentee program has brought together some of the most knowledgeable, intelligent and dedicated females within SLS, essentially creating a melting pot of the best talent and leadership within the organisation. The mentor I have been matched with has absolutely exceeded my expectations. It’s great to learn from someone who I aspire to both professionally and in terms of surf achievements.”
“Selection in this program has been one of the most significant achievements of my life so far. Little did I know that this program would offer such an opportunity for growth and reflection in both my career, SLS aspirations and my family life. My mentor is a fabulous woman who has experienced so much both in her career, community service and family. Her passion and her ability to reflect on situations in a positive and constructive way leaves me feeling energised and empowered each time we meet. I am so glad a took the plunge and completed the application. I am sure, in my mentor, I have made a friend for life!”
“The Women’s Mentoring Program has been a great opportunity to assist other women as they try to find their place in our great organisation. As a mentor I have gained just as much from the experience as my mentee. You never stop learning and this program has provided me with the opportunity for self-reflection and evaluation to help grow me as a person too!”
