The 2017 Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Championships continued into day two on Kingscliff Beach today, with teams competing in the club competition amidst challenging windy conditions.
Nine Masters IRB Championship races were conducted today for the first time in the competitions history. Kiama Downs Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) proved a force to reckon with, finishing with three firsts and a third.
Four time champions North Burleigh SLSC have their sights set on their fifth consecutive Australian IRB Championship title heading into tomorrow’s semi finals, but a tough competition is expected with Kiama Downs SLSC, Kirra SLSC and Williamstown SLSC hot on their tails.
Surf Life Saving Australia General Manager of Capacity and Capability Greg Meagher said today’s racing has set a perfect platform for tomorrow’s finals.
“Today was one of the most intense days of IRB racing we have seen in a long time, with a great display of rescue skills on show” he said.
“We are seeing crews pulling off an almost perfect race and still missing the cut in a very close competition leading into tomorrows finals”.
Competition for the day was suspended by the Safety Committee mid-afternoon after safety concerns around increasingly rough conditions.
Surf Life Saving Australia safety and emergency management coordinator Steve Leahy said a number of factors were taken into consideration before suspending competition.
“With the increasing wind and choppy conditions, a number of clubs raised concerns about the welfare of their competitors,” he said.
The Safety Committee considered this feedback and with the safety of our athletes our top priority a decision was made to suspend the competition for the remainder of the day.”
With improved conditions expected tomorrow’s racing is to resume as scheduled.
Spectators are welcome to attend the event at Kingscliffe Beach to watch Australia’s best IRB crews battle it out for the finals across the final day of competition. Medal ceremonies will to commence late afternoon.
