Surf Life Saving postpones national events due to continuing COVID-19 restrictions
After closely monitoring the continuing COVID-19 situation across the country, Surf Life Saving has today announced the postponement of the coming Coolangatta Gold and National Pool Rescue Championships until November and December, respectively.
Due to the extended COVID-19 lockdown across NSW and border closures in place across multiple states and territories, SLSA has made the difficult decision to ensure that the best possible chance is given to be able to run the national events in the current COVID-19 climate and maximise the potential for as many athletes to participate.
The 2021 Coolangatta Gold was scheduled for the 16-17 October, while the National Pool Rescue Championships were scheduled for 29-31 October, with both competitions set to take place on the Gold Coast, Queensland.
The Coolangatta Gold will now be rescheduled for the 13-14 November while the Pool Rescue Championships will be held on the 3-5 December with both competitions otherwise unchanged.
Surf Life Saving Australia National Sport Manager Wayne Druery said that under the current conditions these events would not be able to run on their original dates and that postponing these events gives them the best chance to go ahead.
“SLSA are committed to running as many events as possible on the national surf sports calendar but under current restrictions these events wouldn’t be possible to run,” Druery said.
“In postponing, we give our athletes and the events the best possible chance to compete and enough time for the current restrictions to change.
“There are no changes to any of our other events at this time, but we continue to explore contingency options across all our events.”
Surf Life Saving Australia will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation in consideration of the rest of the 2021/22 surf sports calendar.
At this stage there are no changes to any other events on the SLSA sports calendar for the 2021/22 season, but should circumstances require any change or adjustment, it will be communicated accordingly.
