Surf Life Saving Australia announced the appointment of Wayne Druery as the 2018/19 referee for the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships. Wayne has a wealth of experience having most recently refereed the Nutri-grain Finals Series, the NSW Age Championship and has been a senior referee for the Aussies for a number of years.
“I am extremely humbled to be appointed to such a prestigious and important position but at the same time I am also very excited to take on the enormous challenges the role presents. I will have a very experienced team around me and have no doubt that with the appointments of both Don and Craig, we will deliver a great Aussies” said Wayne.
In further announcements SLSA has appointed two deputy referees in a new structure moving into 2018/19. The Deputy Referee position has been split into 2 roles; Deputy of scheduling and Deputy of Logistics with the appointments of Donald Van Keimpema and Craig Williams respectively.
The deputy of scheduling will be tasked with beach program management and TV broadcast. Deputy of logistics will attend to back of beach issues, contingency locations and other logistical focuses at the event
“The decision to split the role of deputy was primarily to ensure that the referee can hold overall oversight without inundation across operational matters. In addition, it ensure we are looking forwards to a succession plan for future referee’s and ensure they have adequate resourcing to deliver our premier event” Said Sports Manager Shane Knight.
The Australian Surf Life Saving championships will be held on Scarborough Beach, Perth on April 14-22 in 2018.
