SURF STUDIO: Albatross Nippers
In episode two of Surf Studio we sat down with Nick Marshall from Nobby’s Beach SLSC, the founder of the award-winning Albatross Nippers; an inclusive Nippers program for children with special needs.
Nick has been involved in surf lifesaving since he was a Nipper himself, and said it was his swimming friends that got him involved and he has never looked back since.
“I absolutely loved it,” Marshall said of his introduction to surf lifesaving at Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
“That was probably when I was 10 or 11 and I’ve obviously never left, I’m still here.”
Nick has held various positions and roles throughout his time in Surf Life Saving, from competitor, to coach, to Medical Advisor for the Australian Lifesaving Team and now was founder of the Albatross Nipper program.
“It’s got a bit of everything,” Nick said of Surf Life Saving.
“That’s what I really love about it is, it doesn’t matter what age you are, there’s always something at the club for you.”
From just a couple of kids and families coming down to Nobby’s Beach on the weekend, the Albatross Nippers has grown exponentially over the past five seasons and now spreads across multiple beaches on the Gold Coast involving children, families and volunteers from many surf clubs.
“Probably the biggest moment we’ve had, is when we formed a March Past team and marched at Queensland State in 2019,” Nick said of the program.
“On that particular day I was racing around and trying to get everything done and trying to make sure everything was perfect.
“It was only when you suddenly slow down and a few of the parents were fairly emotional and in tears saying ‘we never thought we’d be a part of a sport where we could all be together like this’”
“Those are the sort of moments where you think wow, this is fantastic that they can be a part of it.”
