SURF STUDIO: Swanbourne Nedlands SLSC ahead of the curve with COVID-19
One club on the West Coast of Australia was ahead of the curve in every sense of the word when it came to COVID-19.
With nearly 20 per cent of the Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club in WA members being made up of medical and health professionals, the club was swift in their response to the global pandemic.
“There’s at least one doctor or nurse on every single patrol,” said Dr Leesa Equid who is an emergency Doctor with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and an active patroller at “Swanny”.
Dr Equid said the club looked to her and two other members who are medical professionals to start a COVID-19 action plan for the club and its members.
“We ended up creating this document and advice with regards to shutting down hires of the club, cancelling organised training and closing of the gym,” Dr Equid said.
“We actually put restrictions in for overseas travel prior to the National recommendations …we were three days ahead of that”.
Following the advice of the COVID-19 committee, Swanbourne Nedlands were one of the last patrolling clubs in WA and Australia for the regular Summer season.
Over the Easter Long weekend as the nation was in the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, Swanbourne Nedlands had its third busiest day of the season but were still on patrol, albeit differently, to make sure beachgoers were safe in the water.
“We only had two people on patrol … despite it ending up being our third busiest day of the season,” Equid said.
“We just ensured it was two senior members of the patrol … a maximum two hours patrolling … and ensuring that we had back up people available on call if they were needed to fill in.”
