Teams named for new Super Surf Teams League
Surf Life Saving Australia’s summer of surf sports will kick into a new gear on December 1 at Bulli NSW with the first round of the Super Surf Teams League.
The Super Surf Teams League is a surf carnival style competition that will feature three rounds over Summer from December to January in conjunction with the Nutri-Grain IronMan & IronWoman Series.
Thirteen teams from across Australia will compete in the inaugural 2019 season as a curtain raiser for the Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWoman Series for rounds three to five.
Teams from New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria and South Australia will compete in Ski, Swim, Board and Run events, as well as competing in the mixed Ocean M Lifesaver Relay.
The Super Surf Teams comprise of four male and four female athletes, with teams based on geographic locations either by State or local regions.
SLSA National Sport Manager Wayne Druery said the Super Surf Teams League is an opportunity for specialist athletes to flex their skills in a competitive arena and provides a pathway for athletes to test themselves against a wide variety of competitors.
“Surf carnivals play an important role in developing our athletes as surf lifesavers, and we want to give as many opportunities as we can to our Surf Life Saving athletes to take part and raise their skills,” Druery said.
“Super Surf Teams Leagues gives specialist athletes the opportunity to compete within a national platform as well as giving up and comers a chance to flex and hone their skills in a competitive environment.”
The Super Surf Teams will provide added entertainment for spectators as part of the travelling 2019-20 Nutri-Grain IronMan & IronWoman Series.
