World Ironman Champion Zane Holmes joined local Champion Ironwoman Alyce Bennett today to present Yamba Surf Life Saving Club with cash and equipment from Telstra after fire destroyed much of the club last month.
The 103-year old surf club, one of the world’s oldest, lost $60,000 worth of patrol gear in the fire.
To help the club rebuild, Telstra will cover its $1,000 entry fees at next month’s DHL 2011 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, along with presenting a $5,000 cheque and $2,500 worth of equipment.
While in Yamba, Holmes and Bennett conducted a training session for club members to help them prepare for the DHL Australian Surf Life Saving Championships to be held on the Gold Coast between 2-10 April.
“When I heard about the fire, I was devastated for the club and its members. Telstra’s assistance package will go a long way, while I hope our tips ahead of next month’s Aussie titles have been helpful,” Holmes said.
Bennett was a member of Yamba SLSC as a junior and when the opportunity arose to work with Telstra to provide this support she jumped at the chance.
“Yamba is home to me and to see the club burn down was terrible. I’m so excited to be able to come back here with Zane and Telstra to help get them back on their feet,” said Bennett.
Yamba Surf Life Saving Club President, Alan Schofield, was grateful for Telstra’s assistance package and to Holmes and Bennett for passing on their knowledge and expertise to club members.
“Telstra’s assistance will help the club get back on its feet and keep the beach safe for holidaymakers and the local community,” said Mr Schofield.
“I know the team competing in the Australian Championships will greatly benefit from Zane and Alyce’s expert coaching. We will be delighted to welcome Alyce home and to welcome Zane to our club in the future and have them as an extended part of our team when we travel to Zane’s home break on the Gold Coast during the Aussies.”
Telstra has been a strong supporter of Surf Life Saving throughout Australia for many years, through programs such as Telstra Beach to Bush, Answer the Call and the Telstra Assistance Fund.
